Lady Jackets finish with 11-16 record, first postseason appearance in 16 years
BELTON — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets’ first appearance at the American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament in 16 years ended Friday afternoon with a heartbreaking five-set loss to the East Texas Baptist Lady Tigers.
Coming off a three-set loss to East Division No. 2 seed UT-Tyler Thursday, the West No. 3 seed Lady Jackets charged back from a 2-0 deficit against East No. 3 seed ETBU, but eventually fell, 25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 20-25, 15-10 to remain winless in three games all-time at the ASC tournament.
Howard Payne finished its third season under head coach Colleen Westfall with an 11-16 overall record and its first trip to the postseason since 2000.
In Friday’s final match of the year, Shelbie Harry paced HPU’s offensive attack with 16 kills trailed by 15 from Zhartezia Bradley, 12 from Kailey Doering, nine from Macy Maniscalo, five each from Cheyanne Lovelady and Alyssa Beasley and one kill from Brittany Taylor.
Lovelady dished out 51 assists while Doering added two and Harry, Callie Molloy and Briana Williams were credited with one apiece.
Lovelady, Taylor and Williams also served aces.
Defensively, Analisa Anzaldua’s 26 digs led HPU followed by 20 from Molloy, 15 from Williams, 12 from Lovelady, 10 from Taylor, eight from Doering, five from Harry, two from Maniscalo and one from Bradley.
Bradley also contributed six blocks, Harry added five and Beasley and Maniscalo finished with four apiece.
East Texas Baptist (17-12) received 20 kills each from Britni Mosher and Mallory Sanders, 34 assists from Kayla Green, 25 digs from Morgan Rupp and five blocks from Mosher.
