SAN ANTONIO — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were dealt a second consecutive loss by their third straight higher-classified opponent of the season, as Division I Incarnate Word chalked up a 91-61 victory Monday night.
HPU (1-2) — which trailed 41-28 at halftime — shot 34 percent (21 of 61) compared to 56 percent (31 of 55) by Incarnate Word (2-1), which also converted 52 percent (12 of 23) of its three-pointers. HPU owned a 41-36 edge in rebounds, but committed 23 turnovers while forcing just 12.
Rickey Guillory led HPU with 14 points followed by Shadd Cole with 13, Isaiah Herrera with nine, J Bailey with eight, Khyce Randall with five, David Dingle and Donovan Jenkins with three apiece, Elijah Pruitt and Talen Davis-Renfro with two points apiece and De’Marcus Hurd and Cody Hastings with one each.
HPU was playing its third game in as many days, defeating Division II Eastern New Mexico, 66-65, in Saturday’s season opener followed by a 75-48 loss at Division II Angelo State Sunday. The next action for HPU is 4 p.m. Sunday at Division I Abilene Christian.
