Brownwood finishes weekend at 4-1 with only loss to Paradise
BROCK — The Brownwood Lady Lions split their final two games at the Brock softball tournament Thursday, resulting in a 4-1 record after one week of regular season action.
Following a 7-2 loss to Paradise in Saturday’s first game, the Lady Lions bounced back with a 12-8 triumph over District 5-4A rival Abilene Wylie in the tournament finale.
Against Wylie, the Lady Lions rallied from an 8-0 deficit as the Lady Bulldogs tallied two runs in the first inning and six in the second. The Lady Lions answered with a six-run the top of third, the tying two runs in the fourth and the four decisive runs in the fifth.
The Lady Lions generated 20 hits, led by four from Victoria Sanchez who also recorded three RBIs. Alexis Larrea added three hits and an RBI, Ayanna Clemons tallied three hits and scored three runs and Emily Perez finished with a pair of hits and a team-high three RBIs. Danyelle Gongora chipped in a pair of hits and two RBIs while Kayla McFarden and JaKobee Holloway contributed two hits and one RBI apiece. Annie Gillispie and Karla Harper also collected singles.
In the circle, Perez tossed all five innings, yielding two earned runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts. Defensively, the Lady Lions committed a pair of errors.
In the loss to Paradise, the Lady Lions mustered single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Paradise jumped in front 2-0 in the first, added two more runs in the fifth and three insurance runs in the sixth.
Larrea took the loss in the circle, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits — including a pair of homers — with five strikeouts and three walks.
The Lady Lions finished with just three hits — two from Perez, who blasted a home run, and one from Sanchez.
Brownwood is back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Breckenridge.
