LITTLE ELM — Reynel Rodriguez, Josh Park and Sebastian Cienfuegos scored goals for Sherman on Tuesday night as the Bearcats swept the season series from Denton Braswell, taking a 3-1 victory to move into fourth place in District 5-5A boys action.

After a sluggish start, the Bearcats got on the board with 25:30 remaining in the first half on a combination pass from Tristan Van Zant to Rodriguez through the middle.

Braswell tied the game at the 32:01 mark of the second half on a penalty kick, but Park gave Sherman the lead back on an assist by Rodriguez, who dribbled down the sideline and dropped it on top of the box for his open teammate. Cienfuegos added an insurance goal off a corner by Matt Schulze to Hugo Espinoza, who crossed to Cienfuegos.

Sherman (7-8-1, 4-3-2) hosts Denton Ryan on Friday night in yet another crucial game with playoff implications for the Bearcats.

WICHITA FALLS — Third-place Wichita Falls Rider scored in the first minute and then scored late for a shutout victory over the Denison Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night.

Rider (7-5-2, 6-3-0) took advantage of an early defensive miscue and then had an insurance goal with two minutes left.

Denison (3-13-2, 0-6-1) will host Denton at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Dr. Rene and Eva Gerard Field at Munson Stadium.

Veronica Sosa and Lourden Bell provided the scoring in each half as the Lady Bearcats (6-9, 3-6) grabbed a win at Bearcat Stadium against Braswell.

Sherman’s first goal came about 10 minutes in when Alexis Mejia got the edge on the left side, centering pass to Sosa which she advanced a few touches then drilled into the back of the net. The second goal came about 15 minutes into the second half when a Brittny Thomas corner kick found a wide-open Bell, who headed it in for the score.

Andrea Orellana kept the clean sheet but wasn’t too busy most of the night.

“A much-needed win after a letdown at Denton on Friday,” head coach Anthony Shearer said. “Hard to adjust to the absence of (Taylor) Wuestenfeld, whose high ankle sprain from last Tuesday’s tilt will likely keep her out the rest of the way. Players have stepped up, but that will really be tested again on Friday when we go to play Ryan.”
