ABILENE — Another comeback wasn’t in the cards for the District 6-3A champion Early Lady Horns, who were blanked by the 7-3A third-seeded Peaster Lady Hounds, 6-0, Thursday night in Game 1 of a Region I-3A quarterfinals series at Abilene Christian University.

Games 2 and 3, if needed, are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday back at ACU.

The Lady Horns (26-8) rallied from a three-run deficit for an 8-6 victory, and a 10-run deficit for a 13-11 triumph against Boyd last weekend. Thursday against Peaster (18-10), however, Early was limited to six hits by Lady Hound pitcher Rylie Melton, who struck out six and walked a pair.

Sydnee Shea and Shauna Kay Connelly accounted for two hits apiece for Early and Parker Smith and Makalya DeLeon added one each, while Emma Loven drew a pair of walks.

Peaster scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the second inning off Early starter

Bailey Dodson was hit by a pitch to start the frame, then Katy Mitchell bunted and reached on a throwing error. With one out, Hannah Bird reached on a fielder’s choice that filled the sacks. A bases-loaded walk by Baylee Chapman scored Dodson with the first run, then Taci Tatum doubled home Mitchell and Bird to stretch the lead to 3-0.

During Allie Arnold’s at-bat, which resulted in a walk, Chapman scored the fourth run on a passed ball. Katie Ruddy then singled up the middle to drive in Tatum and Arnold for the six-run margin.

Peaster finished with a half-dozen hits — two each by Tatum and Ruddy and one apiece by Arnold and Bird — and five walks against DeLeon, while the Early defense committed three errors.
