Former Bangs Dragon J.T. Newton was recently named the Southland Conference’s Relief Pitcher of the Year following a stellar sophomore season at NCAA Division I Houston Baptist University.
Newton posted a 7-0 record with six saves and a 2.15 ERA in 54.1 innings for the Huskies. Newton led HBU in victories, saves and ERA, making 23 appearances on the season — all in relief. Newton also struck out 43 batters and walked 17 while allowing 16 runs — 13 earned — on 51 hits. Opponents batted .254 against Newton this season.
The Huskies owned a 29-25 overall record, 18-12 in conference action. After dropping their initial contest in the Southland Conference Tournament earlier this week to Central Arkansas, 15-4, HBU responded with victories over Lamar (8-5), McNeese (5-4) and Central Arkansas (6-2) before a season-ending 3-0 loss to Central Arkansas Saturday.
During his time at Bangs, Newton — the son of J.D. and Stephanie Brewer — was a four-year letter winner and member of the Dragons’ 2013 Class 3A state tournament team. Newton also has a postseason perfect game to his credit.
Newton played his freshman season at Cisco Junior College where he posted a 2-1 record with one save and a 4.88 ERA. The 6-1, 210-pound right hander struck out 32 and walked 11 in 27.2 innings.
