In an American Southwest Conference men’s soccer shootout, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets doubled up the Louisiana College Wildcats, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Field.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-1 on the season, 2-1 in ASC action with the victory, while Louisiana College slipped to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Michael Westerman, Tracer Moore and Daniel Lemus each recorded a pair of goals as Howard Payne raced out to a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Westerman opened the scoring just 2:51 into the contest with an unassisted goal, then Moore followed at 9:06 with an assist from Westerman. Westerman followed with his second goal, assisted by Lemus, at the 17:27 mark, while Lemus made the score 4-0 at 23:21 with Moore assisting. Moore tallied the final goal of the first half with 10:47 left on an assist from Jonpaul Vargas.

Louisiana College trimmed the deficit to 5-3 on goals by Francisco Silvestre with 20:25 left, Alvaro Riera with 9:10 remaining and Phay San with 5:09 to go.

Lemus answered with the final HPU goal with 3:18 left to thwart Louisiana College’s hopes of an improbable comeback.

Nicholas Panameno recorded four saves in 69:35 in goal for Howard Payne while Matt Prall chalked up three saves in 20:25. Louisiana College attempted 14 shots with 10 on goal, compared to 17 for Howard Payne with 13 on frame.

The Yellow Jackets host Belhaven at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lady Jackets 2, Louisiana College 0

The Howard Payne Lady Jackets improved to 2-1 in American Southwest Conference women’s soccer action, rebounding from their first league defeat with a 2-0 victory over Louisiana College Thursday at Citizens National Bank Field.

The Lady Jackets (3-2-1, 2-0) scored both their goals in the first half. Howard Payne recorded an own goal when Louisiana College booted the ball into its own net just 2:46 into the contest. Then, at the 12:46 mark, Rachel Crane added an insurance goal with the assist to Kacie Masters.

Defensively, Nicole Goodwin went the distance in goal, recording five saves en route to the shutout.

Louisiana College (0-4, 0-2) attempted 10 shots overall compared to Howard Payne’s 13, with five on frame — one each by Crane, Kaitlyn Harrison, Dayane Gutierrez and Jada Austin.

The Lady Jackets host Belhaven at 2 p.m. Saturday
