The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets won their season finale over LeTourneau, 4-1, Saturday at Citizens National Bank Field, but it was one victory short of qualifying for the American Southwest Conference men’s soccer championship tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (5-8, 3-7) raced out to a 3-1 halftime lead over LeTourneau (3-9-4, 3-6-2), and added an insurance goal in the second half.

Daniel Lemus put the Yellow Jackets on the board just 2:45 into the contest with an assist from Dylan Person, then Tracer Moore scored unassisted 2:19 later.

LeTourneau closed the gap to 2-1 when Edward Solis scored with an assist from Eduardo Solis 11:48 into the contest. HPU then added an own goal with 8:33 left in the half.

Lemus contributed his second goal of the game with 16:56 remaining to round out the scoring for Howard Payne.

In goal, Nicholas Panameno tallied six saves for HPU as LeTourneau attempted 15 shots with seven on goal.

Howard Payne ended up attempting 17 shots with 13 on target.


LeTourneau 3, Lady Jackets 1


Howard Payne’s fourth consecutive loss, and seventh in the last eight outings, by a 2-0 count to LeTourneau Saturday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Field resulted in the end of the season for the Lady Jackets.

The Lady Jackets (5-9-1, 4-8) attempted 11 shots with six on goal — one each by Kaitlyn Harrison, Dayane Gutierrez, Morgan Pattereson, Rachel Crane, Anissa Peralta and Lesly Garcia.

LeTourneau (9-6-3, 5-5-2) fired 32 shots with 21 on target as HPU goal keeper Nicole Goodwin recorded 19 saves.

LeTourneau scored both goals in the first half, as Rebekah Stevenson found the net 20:42 before intermission with an assist from Jennifer Martin. Kelli Sonnier added an insurance goal with 9:01 remaining in the half with another assist from Martin.
