Brownwood remains undefeated with victories over Hico, 53-48, and Llano, 66-15
SAN SABA — The Brownwood Lady Lions qualifier for Saturday's championship game at the San Saba tournament, completing an undefeated run through pool play with two more victories Friday.
Brownwood first rallied past the Hico Lady Tigers, 53-48, then throttled the Llano Lady Jackets, 66-14, to improve to 6-0 on the season.
In the win over Class 2A No. 21 Hico, Brownwood climbed out of a 26-19 halftime hole to snatch the victory.
Trailing by seven points at the break, the Lady Lions outscored Hico 14-2 in the third period to regain a 33-28 advantage and went on to collect a five-point win.
Sage Cupps led the Lady Lions with 17 points followed by Ryleigh Dalleh with 15, Mallory Garcia with 11, Mya Wallace and Kenya Barnes with with four each and Taytum Sutton with two points.
The Lady Lions shot 34 percent to Hico's 30, as both teams converted seven three-pointers. Brownwood was outscored 11-8 at the free throw line, but owned a 30-26 edge in rebounds. The Lady Lions also forced eight steals while committing 15 turnovers.
Against Llano, Brownwood raced out to a 22-2 lead after one quarter which grew to 37-6 by halftime and 56-10 through three periods.
Garcia and Cupps poured in 17 points apiece, Dalleh added 10, Barnes finished with nine, Green contributed six, Wallace chipped in three and Sutton and McKenzie Welker recorded two points.
Brownwood converted 42 percent (26 of 62) of its field goals, including 41 percent (7 of 17) of its free throws, along with burying 77 percent (7 of 9) of it free throws. The Lady Lions also pulled down 26 rebounds, dished out 14 assists and tallied 20 steals.
Saturday's championship game is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. tip, with host San Saba the likely foe for Brownwood.
