MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Despite eclipsing the century mark, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets slipped to 0-3 on the season with a 141-107 loss to host Rhodes College in tournament action Saturday afternoon.
Howard Payne trailed 65-53 at halftime and scored 54 points after the break, but gave up 76 points in the second half.
Rhodes (3-1) attempted 92 shots, including 49 three-pointers, and converted 58 percent of its field goal attempts, including 23 treys. Seven Rhodes players finished in double figures — Bryce Berry with 20 points, Price Dalton and Vaughn Samson with 13 each, Anesu Nyawata with 12, Daniel Darst with 11 and Mitch Weatherford and Owen Galvin with 10 points apiece.
Khyce Randall scored a career-high 41 points and chipped in 12 rebounds to complete a double-double for the Yellow Jackets, who knocked down 56 percent (40 of 71) of their field goals. HPU attempted just eight three-pointers, converting three. HPU was also 24 of 33 at the free throw line (73 percent).
Timothy Aguero added 13 points followed by Drake Cooper and Darren Farmer with 12 apiece, Shadd Cole with 10, De’Marcus Hurd with nine, Jarvaris Jones with six and Talen Davis and Cody Hastings with two points apiece.
The Yellow Jackets seek their first victory against Millsaps College at 1 p.m. Sunday in Memphis.
