HPU men slip to 0-2 in conference action
Following a 39-point loss to UT-Dallas in their American Southwest Conference opener on Nov. 30, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets experienced a similar fate with a 98-63 home defeat against LeTourneau Monday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets (2-5, 0-2) have surrendered 98 points in both their conference contests - which is the same number of points HPU allows per game on average thus far. Howard Payne, meanwhile, was held 17 points below its season average of 80 points per outing.
LeTourneau (7-2, 3-1) jumped out to a 24-5 lead just eight minutes into the contest. Howard Payne closed the gap to 10 points, 30-20, on a three-pointer by Khyce Randall with 6:57 left before halftime, but the Yellow Jackets faced a 44-29 deficit at halftime.
LeTourneau continued to stretch its lead in the second half, with the cushion reaching 38 points, 98-60, with 1:12 on the clock.
Nate West recorded the second triple double in LeTourneau history, leading the charge with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. LeTourneau shot 55 percent (37 of 67) and buried 11 three-pointers, while sinking 65 percent (13 of 20) of its free throws.
Joining West in double figures were Alec Colhoff with 18 points, Caleb Loggins and Seth Mattson with 12 apiece, Caylab Herrera with 11 and Javaughn Danzler with 10 points.
For Howard Payne - which shot just 31 percent (24 of 77) from the field, with four three-pointers, and 52 percent (11 of 21) at the free throw line - De'Marcus Hurd scored a team-best 17 points followed by Randall with 16, Cole Bene' with eight, Thomas Bingham with seven, Darren Farmer with five, Timothy Aguero with four, Shadd Cole with three, Joshua Carroll with two and Joshua Taylor with one point.
HPU is back in ASC action at Belhaven (2-4, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
