Dragons upended by Brownwood, Brady, Comanche and De Leon

The Bangs Dragons were unable to collect a victory during their four-game stint at the TexasBank Holiday Classic, concluding action Saturday with losses of 54-33 to District 6-3A rival Comanche and 61-37 to De Leon.

The Dragons opened the tournament with a 72-37 defeat at the hands of host Brownwood and followed with a 54-49 setback against Coleman, another district foe, Friday morning.

In Saturday’s outing versus Comanche, the Dragons (2-13) surrendered the first seven points and were forced into catchup mode throughout the contest.

Comanche led 13-5 after one quarter and needed just 10 seconds to push the lead to double figures for the first time.

Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second period, the Dragons closed the halftime gap to a dozen, 26-14.

Bangs crept back within single digits, 27-19, on a three-pointer by Colton Brewer just 1:44 into the third period. Comanche pushed the lead back to 11 points, but another trey from Trevor Slaughter brought the Dragons within eight again, 37-29, at the start of the fourth period.

Any hopes of a Dragons’ victory ended midway through the fourth period, as Bangs was held scoreless for the initial 5:27 of the frame. In that time, Comanche reeled off 13 consecutive points to open a 50-29 advantage with 2:33 remaining.

Brewer and Dawson Light paced Bangs with 13 points apiece followed by four from Slaughter, two from George Nicholas and one point from Justin Wilson.

For Comanche, Kade Mercer poured in a game-high 16 points.

The Dragons are slated to visit Clyde at 8 p.m. Tuesday in non-district action.
