ALPINE — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were upended by American Southwest Conference West Division leader Sul Ross, 84-65, Saturday — the third loss in the last four outings for head coach Troy Drummond’s squad.

Despite the defeat, Howard Payne (7-9, 3-5) remained tied with Hardin-Simmons (5-11, 3-5) — a 97-94 loser to Concordia Saturday — for fourth place in the ASC West standings.

Sul Ross (12-4, 7-1) buried 52 percent (31 of 60) of its field goal attempts compared to 38 percent (23 of 60) for Howard Payne. The Yellow Jackets owned a 46-33 edge in rebounds, but committed 16 turnovers that led to 23 Lobo points, while HPU managed just 13 points off Sul Ross’ 10 giveaways.

The Yellow Jackets trailed by double digits, 37-26, at halftime and got no closer than nine points early in the second half, while Sul Ross scored the final seven points to end the game with its largest cushion of 19 points.

Khyce Randall recorded yet another double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds to spark the Yellow Jacket offense, while Javaris Jones also finished in double figures with 14 points. De’Marcus Hurd added nine points followed by Shadd Cole, Joshua Taylor and Darren Farmer with four each, and Thomas Bingham, Rickey Guillory and Colton Otts with two points apiece.

For Sul Ross, Caleb Thomasson tallied 15 points, Stephen Walker contributed with 14 and Brock Anders and B.J. Hollis finished with 10 apiece.

The Yellow Jackets welcome Hardin-Simmons at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and McMurry (4-11, 3-6) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
