The Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes on Saturday revealed the coaches for this summer's Big Country Chevy Dealers FCA All-Star Festival, and second-year Brownwood Lions head coach Kyle Maxfield has been chosen to lead the Red Team in the 19th Annual Myrle Greathouse All-Star Football Classic at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene Saturday, June 9.

“Everyone knows what the FCA stands for and the way they're always helping young men and women, and Brownwood has been a part of the festivities the last several years with the basketball games thanks to (Brownwood Area FCA Director) Tony Daniel,” Maxfield said. “When you look back at the coaches that have been a part of the game and the great players that have played, not only the players that have gone on to play college and professional ball, but all the great high school players in the Big Country area, it's an honor to be a part of it.”

In two seasons at Brownwood, Maxfield has led the Lions to a 12-9 record, a pair of postseason appearances and one bi-district championship. Maxfield, who was the only coach from Brown County selected to coach a sport this year, stated this will be his third all-star game to be involved in, and second as a head coach.

“I was the head coach of a game in Lubbock, and just getting to know kids from different towns, even your big rivals, it's always neat to hear their stories and get to know them,” Maxfield said. “Even though you're only with them four days, you spend a lot of time with them and get to know them and their families because of the banquets and so forth. That's the neatest thing about it.”

Maxfield will be assisted by Chris Kinkaid from Abilene Wylie, Greg Hardcastle from Dublin, Danny Dudgeon from Abilene Cooper, Jeb Dixon from Gorman and Nick Gonzales from Abilene Clack Middle School.

The Blue Team will be led by head coach Jason Wilhelm of Menard with assistants Tommy Martinez from Abilene High, Michael Johnson from Eldorado, Brian Hodnett from Haskell, Cory Mandrell from Snyder and Micah Clay from Abilene Craig Middle School.

“We had the draft Saturday morning and that was fun in itself because you're trying to outmaneuver the other team,” Maxfield said. “It's spirited, but at the same time it's a friendly competition.”

Names of the players in the games have not been released yet, but Maxfield will have the opportunity to coach a few Brownwood Lions one last time.

“The couple of kids we have on the team are very well deserving,” Maxfield said. “Coaches not only nominate talented players, but it also depends on what kind of kids they are. We get to coach the best of the best, not just the best athletes, but the best kids.”

The All-Star Induction and Awards Banquet will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6 at the Abilene Civic Center.

The All-Star Festival begins Friday, June 8 with the softball and baseball games at Angelo State, the volleyball game will take place at noon Saturday, June 9 at Abiene Wylie High School, and the girls and boys basketball games are set to begin at 4 p.m. Saturday,June 9 at the Brownwood Coliseum, according to the Big Country FCA press release.
