Howard Payne's skid reached four games Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum, and with that the Yellow Jackets have fallen to the bottom of the American Southwest Conference West Division standings.

The McMurry War Hawks notched an 83-73 win over Howard Payne as the Yellow Jackets slipped to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in ASC action while McMurry improved to 4-7 in conference play and 5-12 for the year.

HPU again struggled from the floor offensively, converting just 35 percent (24 of 68) of its field goal attempts. The Yellow Jackets started hot, draining 47 percent (15 of 32) in the opening half as Howard Payne trailed by a single point, 38-37, at halftime. In the second half, however, the Jackets sank just 25 percent (9 of 36) of their shots, allowing McMurry to pull away.

Khyce Randall finished with 21 points for HPU, but no other Yellow Jacket eclipsed a half-dozen points. Shadd Cole, De'Marcus Hurd and Cody Hastings chipped in six points each, Darren Farmer, Javaris Jones and Joshua Taylor added five points apiece, Timothy Aguero, Cole Bene', Talen Davis and Colton Otts each recorded four points and Rickey Guillory scored three.

The War Hawks, meanwhile, shot 49 percent (26 of 53) for the game, including 54 percent (13 of 24) after halftime. The stellar shooting allowed McMurry to overcome a 44-38 discrepancy in rebounds and 19 turnovers.

Zacc Carter and Luke Stephenson each poured in 23 points for McMurry, while Larandall Scroggins contributed 15 points.

Howard Payne hits the road at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to visit Mary Hardin-Baylor (13-5, 6-4) — a 102-98 winner over Concordia Saturday — in hopes of halting its losing streak. UMHB is 9-1 at home this season.
