The Brownwood Lady Lions battled reigning Class 4A state champion Stephenville to a scoreless tie during regulation in their District 4-4A soccer encounter Friday night at Gordon Wood Stadium, but the Honeybees prevailed, 3-2, in a penalty kick shootout.
Beatris Chavarria, Brinkley Harlow and Courtney Langley recorded goals in the shootout for Stephenville (3-0 in district), while Madison Chesser and Taylar Kinzler found the net for the Lady Lions (10-3, 1-2 in district).
“It was a case of us beating ourselves,” said Brownwood head coach Brent Hardwick. “In the PK shootout, we had three misses, two of which weren't on goal. In a shootout if you're going to lose you need to make the opposing keeper beat you by forcing her to make saves but that just wasn't the case for us.”
The Lady Lions begin the second of three rounds of district action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Abilene Wylie. Brownwood dropped the first district meeting with Wylie, 3-2, in Brownwood despite owning a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Stephenville 1, Lions 0
The Brownwood Lions are continuing the search for their first District 4-4A soccer victory after suffering a 1-0 loss to Stephenville Friday night at Gordon Wood Stadium.
The Lions (4-9-1, 0-3) completed the first of three rounds of district competition with a one-goal loss, a shootout loss and a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Wylie, which hosts Brownwood at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
“The boys played pretty well,” Hardwick said. “Stephenville's only goal was deflected in by one of our defenders.”
