In its first outing under new head coach Crystal Blazek, the Brownwood High tennis team swept Sweetwater, 19-0, at home Wednesday morning to kick off the 2018 fall team tennis campaign.
“The first win was great,” Blazek said. “The team is excited and we as a coaching staff are too. We saw some good things and look forward to a great season.”
Chalking up boys singles victories were No. 1 Gabe Hinojosa (8-0 over Berry), No. 2 Mo Goff (8-4 over Hughes), No. 3 James Bautista (8-3 over Humphries), No. 4 Cameron Smith (8-4 over Frieda), No. 5 Jadyn Semintal over Gonzales (8-3 over Gonzales), and No. 6 Oscar Ledezma (8-1 over Malone).
Picking up girls singles wins were No. 1 Piper Barberie (8-1 over Rando), No. 2 Lillian Jonescue (8-1 over Gilmore), No. 3 Samantha Ethridge (8-1 over Moore), No. 4 Mckinzie Adkins (8-0 over M. Tovar), No. 5 Kaytlin Welch (8-3 over P. Tovar) and No. 6 K. Renfroe (8-0 over Zarate).
Landing the win column in boys doubles were No. 1 Hinojosa and Smith (6-2, 6-1 over Berry and Hughes), No. 2 Goff and Matthew Bundick (6-0, 6-0 over Gonzales and Malone), No. 3 Alex Smith and Clark Delatorre (6-2, 6-3 over Frieda and Humphries.
Victories in girls doubles belonged to No. 1 Barberie and Adkins (6-0, 6-3 over Smola and Marlett), No. 2 Welch and Hannah Netherland (6-1, 6-1 over Gallardo and Castellanos), No. 3 Aaliyah Uvalle and Jonescue (7-5, 6-1 over Torres and Dodd).
Brownwood also tallied the mixed doubles victory, which was earned by Bautista and Victoria Ramos (6-2, 6-0 over Pena and Pena).
The Lions and Lady Lions will be back in action at Killeen High and Harker Heights Friday, and against Odessa and a yet to be determined for at Killeen High Saturday.
