GRANBURY — Brownwood's winless drought reached five matches before the Lady Lions bounced back with a pair of victories over Class 6A opponents during Thursday's first day of the Granbury volleyball tournament.

After falling to another Class 6A program in Copperas Cove (25-17, 25-20), the Lady Lions rebounded by sweeping El Paso Americas (25-17, 25-20) and Irving High (25-26, 25-16) to even their season record at 5-5.

“We played a very fast, competitive team in Copperas Cove first and although we lost we played well and they forced us to speed up our defense,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Jessica Withrow. “Playing that game got us ready to get our next two wins. I'm very proud of how they played and I'm excited for tomorrow.”

The victory over Americas was Brownwood's first since last Friday when the Lady Lions knocked off Class 5A Wichita Falls in straight sets in their second match at the Abilene Bev Ball Classic.

Against Americas, Torrey Miller paced the Lady Lions attack with 18 kills trailed by Aleyia Cotton with eight, Olivia Fowler with four, and Caitlyn Moody, Gracie Boswell and Katelyn Windham with one apiece.

Hadley Monroe distributed 17 assists while Miller added 10, Davalynn Monroe tallied two and Cotton was credited with one.

Behind the service line, Moody recorded the lone ace.

Defensively, Davalynn Monroe finished with 21 digs followed by Miller with 11, Moody and Annie Gillispie with four each, Hadley Monroe with three, Cotton, Fowler and Lakyn Ratliff with two apiece and Windham and Becca Church each with one.

Recording blocks were Windham with two and Cotton and Miller with one apiece.

The Lady Lions finished the day with a lopsided win over Irving High as Miller collected 15 kills followed by Cotton with six, Fowler and Windham with two apiece and Church, Lindsey Larose and Hadley Monroe with one each.

Hadley Monroe also tallied 16 assists with six coming from Miller and Davalynn Monroe chipped in two.

Brownwood recorded a season-best seven aces with four provided by Hadley Monroe while Miller, Church and Windham added one each.

On the defensive end, Davalynn Monroe chalked up 12 digs trailed by seven from Gillispie, six from Miller, three from Windham, two from Hadley Monroe and one each from Moody, Cotton, Fowler and Church.

In the loss to Copperas Cove, Miller and Cotton notched seven kills each trailed by Boswell with three, Fowler with two, and Windham and Larose with one apiece.

Hadley Monroe recorded eight assists, Miller had seven, and Davalynn Monroe dished out a pair.

Hadley Monroe and Moody served Brownwood's two aces.

Davalynn Monroe's nine digs were a team-high followed by Miller with seven, Gillispie with four, Moody with three, Boswell with two, and Windham, Ratliff and Church with one apiece.

The Lady Lions did not tally a block in the defeat.

Brownwood continues action in the three-day Granbury tournament on Friday against a yet to be determined foe.
