The Brownwood Lions will conclude their second week of preseason practice with their first scrimmage Saturday morning at Liberty Hill. The Panthers handed the Lions a 70-49 loss in Liberty Hill during Week 3 of the 2017 regular season.
The JV and freshmen will take a split field first at 10 a.m., with defense working on one end while offense works on the other. The format will feature the starting units of both offenses running 10 plays, followed by eight plays from the second teams, and a third round of eight plays for remaining players.
The varsity will begin action around 11:15 or 11:30 a.m., according to Brownwood first-year head coach Sammy Burnett, with a format of 12 plays for the first-team offenses, 12 plays for the second-team offenses, and 12 additional plays of a mix and match lineup. The scrimmage will then conclude with a 20-minute live session.
“We want to see our kids be physical, see them play with great passion, fly around to the ball on defense, and on offense execute as much as possible,” Burnett said regarding his scrimmage goals for the Lions. “It's important that they're picking up our schemes and that they control their emotions.”
In regard to what areas the coaching staff will be paying closest attention to, offensive line remains at the forefront.
“Without a doubt the offensive line,” Burnett said. “We have to solidify our five up front. We're really going to work and focus on that area.”
The Lions may be short-handed Saturday but not because of injuries. A stomach bug has plagued the team all week and could be a factor Saturday as well.
“We have a lot of kids out right, six or seven with a stomach bug that's been going on all week,” Burnett said. “We do have an issue with that, but at this point we're not holding anyone out. We'll see how it goes the next couple of days and if they're still not feeling too good then we'll hold them out.”
Following Saturday's scrimmage, the Lions will host Burnet on Thursday, Aug. 23 for the second and final scrimmage prior to the Aug. 31 season opener at Gordon Wood Stadium against Brock.
