The Brownwood JV Lions improved to 2-2 on the season with a 35-6 thrashing of Wichita Falls Rider Wednesday night.

The Lions opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal by Blaize Espinoza at the 7:20 mark of the second period. Espinoza then hurled a 34-yard touchdown pass to Dane Johnson at the 4:55 juncture to extend the lead to 9-0.

Royshad Henderson stretched the advantage to 15-0 on a 22-yard scoring sprint with 3:14 left before intermission. Rider scored its only touchdown with 32 seconds remaining in the second period, but Espinoza connected with Henderson on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 5 seconds to go for a 21-6 halftime lead.

In the second half, Espinoza hit Johnson on an 89-yard touchdown pass and Espinoza converted the extra point for a 28-6 lead with 4:15 left in the contest.

Then, with 3:45 remaining, Baylor Tidwell found the end zone on a 4-yard carry and Espinoza booted the extra point for the final 35-6 margin.


Freshman Lions 28, Wichita Falls Rider 6


The Brownwood Freshman Lions leveled their overall record at 2-2 with a 28-6 home victory over Wichita Falls Rider Wednesday.

The Lions opened the scoring in the second period with a 37-yard touchdown run by Cade Jetton.

Before halftime, Brownwood boosted its advantage to 14-0 on a 6-yard carry by Jetton and a two-point conversion by Uriah King.

Rider tallied its only points on the first offensive play of the second half, a 62-yard pass.

The Lions answered with Jetton’s third touchdown run from 1 yard out, and a Major Bowden two-point conversion that extended the lead to 22-6.

Brownwood added its final touchdown in the fourth period on Jetton’s fourth touchdown carry, a 42-yard sprint, for the final 28-6 margin.

Defensive standouts for the Lions included Jakob Hataway with two tackles and two interceptions; Eugene Zuniga with four tackles including one for loss; Uriah King with seven tackles, Bowden with six tackles, Devin Villegas with a fumble recovery, and Troup Bishop with an interception.
