The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets split the two games on their longest American Southwest Conference road trip of the season, bouncing back from a Thursday 2-1 loss to Belhaven with a Saturday 1-0 triumph over Louisiana College.
In HPU’s victory, Michael Westerman recorded the game’s only goal on a penalty kick just 48 seconds into overtime.
The Yellow Jackets attempted 23 shots with nine on goal — four by Reid Longabaugh, two by Westerman and one each by Abdias Rodriguez, Spencer Lyon and Angel Rivas.
Louisiana College shot eight but only one was on target, and denied by HPU goal keeper Andrew Hackney.
In Howard Payne’s 2-1 loss to Belhaven, the Yellow Jackets grabbed an early lead when Westerman scored on a penalty kick just 1:30 in the contest, but Belhaven drew even with 20:24 left in the first half as Max McGuire scored with an assist by Alex Hale.
With 16:45 left in the first half, Hale scored the game-winner for Belhaven on an assist by McGuire.
Howard Payne attempted five shots with four on goal — by Westerman, Longabaugh, Alejandro Molina, and Khaled Ameen.
Belhaven took 12 shots with five on target as Hackney recorded three saves.
The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-1) resume their ASC schedule at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when they welcome UT-Dallas.
