SANTA ANNA — The Blanket Tigers, in their pre-district finale, kept their flawless record intact with a 59-12 road victory over the Santa Anna Mountaineers Friday night.
The Tigers (6-0) produced 333 yards of total offense — 218 rushing and 115 passing — while limiting the Mountaineers (2-4) to just 85 yards — 75 through the air and a mere 10 on the ground.
Kameron Spivey rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 3 of 5 passes for 103 yards and three more scores. John John Alexander also completed a 10-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Simpson made all four receptions — all for touchdowns — totaling 145 yards. Hector Castaneda chipped in 45 yards on the ground with a trip to the end zone as well.
For Santa Anna — which was coming off a 54-48 win over Mullin last week — Alex Crowder connected on 6 of 12 passes for 70 yards, including a 46-yard scoring toss to Cesar Padilla. Jayton Perry caught three passes for 13 yards and Jaxson Diggs added a 7-yard reception, along with 18 yards on the ground.
The Mountaineers also scored on a fumble return.
Next week, Blanket hosts Brookesmith (3-2), a 48-28 winner over Lometa Friday night, in the District 15-A Division II opener for both teams, and the Tigers’ homecoming contest. Meanwhile, Santa Anna visits Blackwell (6-0), which defeated Veribest, 67-22, Friday night, in the Mountaineers’ pre-district finale.
Brookesmith 48, Lometa 28
BROOKESMITH – The Brookesmith Mustangs will carry their first win streak of the season into next week’s District 15-A Division II opener thanks to Friday night’s 48-28 victory over the Lometa Hornets.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first period and kept Lometa at bay the rest of the contest.
Brookesmith finished with 283 yards of total offense — 211 rushing and 72 passing — while allowing 204 yards — 127 on the ground and 77 through the air. Both teams turned the ball over once.
Avery Williford paced the Mustangs’ rushing attack with 107 yards and three touchdowns, while Mason Brummett chipped in 94 yards and a score and Jonathan Willoughby racked up 30 yards with a trip to the end zone.
Through the air, Brummett connected on 4 of 7 passes for 49 yards with a 17-yard touchdown to Cody Mazurek. Randall Williams added a 19-yard catch.
Williford also led the Brookesmith defense with 13 tackles.
Next week, Brookesmith (3-2) visits undefeated Blanket (6-0), which is coming off a 59-12 victory over Santa Anna, in the district opener for both teams.
NEWCASTLE 70, MAY 49
NEWCASTLE — The May Tigers were handed their second consecutive loss, and second defeat of the season, by the Newcastle Bobcats, 70-49, Friday night.
The Tigers finished with 312 yards of total offense — 248 rushing and 64 passing.
Rory Bustamante led the way on the ground with 101 yards and two touchdowns, Daniel Salinas chipped in 87 yards, Blake Harrell rushed for 50 yards and two scores and Lane McGinn added a 10-yard carry.
Through the air, Bustamante threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Chris Flenniken, who grabbed two scoring tosses for 38 yards. Seth Johnston was 3 of 6 for 27 yards with two scores including a 12-yard touchdown to Tyler Wheeler. Bustamante caught a 7-yard touchdown and Salinas added two catches for 6 yards.
Defensively, Salinas recorded nine tackles and caused a fumble, McGinn finished with six tackles, Flenniken tallied five tackles with a pick and Bustamante netted five tackles.
Next week, May (4-2) visit reigning Class A Division II state champion Strawn (4-2), which is coming off a 34-23 loss to Garden City.
