MINERAL WELLS – The Brownwood Lady Lions on Tuesday snapped a three-game losing streak and completed a sweep of District 7-4A rival Mineral Wells with a 20-25, 27-25, 25-14, 25-15 road victory over the Lady Rams.
The win will likely send the fourth-place Lady Lions (11-16, 2-3) to the playoffs, barring some major upsets by last-place Mineral Wells (0-5 in district) down the stretch.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Jessica Withrow. “Once we got our rhythm going we played very well together. The girls knew this was a crucial game for us to guarantee our playoff spot and once we got our confidence we were in control and playing with energy.”
Torrey Miller sparked the offense with 19 kills followed by Olivia Fowler with eight, Aleyia Cotton with seven, Gracie Boswell with six, Katelyn Windham with three and Lindsey Larose with two.
Hadley Monroe distributed 22 assists while Miller contributed 16 and four came from Davalynn Monroe.
Annie Gillispie served five aces, Davalynn Monroe logged four and Miller tallied a pair.
On the defensive end, Davalynn Monroe notched 17 digs followed by Hadley Monroe with 14, Gillispie with 10, Caitlyn Moody with seven, Miller with six, Windham with four, Fowler with two and Lakyn Ratliff, Boswell, Cotton and Larose with one apiece.
At the net, Larose was in on five blocks, Miller had a hand in four, Fowler and Windham chipped in three each and Cotton was credited with one.
The Lady Lions visit district leader and third-ranked Glen Rose at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Glen Rose won the first meeting between the two teams in straight sets on Sept. 25 in Brownwood.
