ABILENE — With two seconds remaining, Blaine Phariss scored the only goal with an assist from Frane Vidosevic as Hardin-Simmons slipped past Howard Payne, 1-0, Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets took 10 shots with two on goal — both by Reid Longabaugh.

Hardin-Simmons (3-8-1, 3-4) fired 15 shots with nine on frame as Andrew Hackney recorded eight saves for HPU.

On Saturday, HPU was dealt another American Southwest Conference defeat as McMurry chalked up a 5-2 victory.

The War Hawks struck first with a goal by Aaron Webb 15:32 into the contest, but the Yellow Jackets answered 11:29 later as Adolfo Rodriguez scored with an assist from Zachary Moreno to knot the score.

With 11:25 left in the opening half, McMurry (4-6-3, 3-4-1) took the lead for good, 2-1, as Javi Mejia scored with an assist from Rafael Lara.

Leading 2-1 at halftime, McMurry picked up its third goal with 28:28 left when Lara scored off an assist from Webb.

Webb tacked on his second goal with 19:47 remaining to stretch the lead to 4-1.

HPU’s Alejandro Molina ended McMurry’s run of three straight goals as he found the net with 13:28 left as the Yellow Jackets crept within 4-2.

McMurry added a fifth goal with 1:51 left, scored by Jordan Sczech,

HPU attempted 13 shots with four on goal to McMurry’s 17 with 11 on frame. Hackney tallied six saves for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets (3-8, 2-6) are off until Saturday when they host Sul Ross at 3:30 p.m. in their home finale.
