MARSHALL — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets missed out on a berth in the American Southwest Conference men’s soccer tournament with a 2-1 overtime loss at East Texas Baptist in Saturday night’s regular season finale.
The Yellow Jackets (5-9, 4-7) finished in ninth place in the final ASC standings with 12 points, one point behind eighth-place Hardin-Simmons (4-10-2, 4-6-1) as the top eight teams move on to the postseason. Three points are awarded for each conference victory, while ties are worth one point.
East Texas Baptist (9-5-2, 6-3-2), which finished fourth in the ASC for the regular season, scored the decisive goal 5:17 into the extra session as Max Ponticorvo found the net with an assist from Daniel Rutter.
Howard Payne jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 6:19 left before halftime as Michael Westerman scored on a penalty kick.
ETBU drew even at 1 with 9:19 left in regulation as Rutter scored from 25 yards out.
The Yellow Jackets attempted 10 shots with five on goal — two by Abdias Rodriguez and one each by Westerman, Spencer Lyon and Angel Rivas.
East Texas Baptist fired 13 shots with seven on frame as ASC Tri-Defensive Player of the Week Andrew Hackney tallied five saves for Howard Payne.

MARSHALL — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets concluded their soccer season with a 2-0 loss at East Texas Baptist Saturday, their eighth straight defeat to close the year.
The Lady Jackets (2-12-1, 2-8-1) yielded a goal in each half as Raegan Kappler scored twice for ETBU (8-7-1, 5-6). Kappler opened the scoring 12:20 into the contest and closed it with 11:05 left.
Howard Payne finished with six shots and on four goal — two by Dayane Gutierrez and one apiece by Lesly Garia and Kaitlyn Harrison.
ETBU attempted 18 shots with eight on target as Lady Jacket goal keeper Delaney Castor recorded six saves.
