In a turnover-filled affair, the Brownwood Freshman Maroon Lions dropped a 26-20 decision to Waco La Vega Thursday at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Lions forced three La Vega turnovers, but coughed up the ball three times themselves — the last coming late in the fourth period.

La Vega opened the scoring in the second period by forcing a fumble in the end zone for a 6-0 advantage.

The Lions responded with a 72-yard touchdown run by Major Bowden to draw even at 6.

La Vega's next drive lasted just one play as the Pirates grabbed a 14-6 advantage. But the Lions again knotted the score before halftime as a 3-yard Bowden run, coupled with Bowden's two-point conversation, evened the score at 14 at the break.

The Lions seized a 20-14 lead in the fourth period on an 8-yard carry by Bowden after Brownwood forced and recovered a fumble in the red zone.

La Vega leveled the score at 20 and with three minutes left, then the Lions fumbled which set up the Pirates' winning touchdown with 15 seconds remaining.

Defensive standouts for the Lions included Bowden (10 tackles), Uriah King (5 tackles, TFL, sack, FF, 2 FR), Jakob Hataway (4 tackles, FF), Ethan Pesina (2 tackles, TFL, FR), and William O'Dell (1 tackle, FF).
