SHERMAN — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets both opened their 2018-19 basketball seasons Friday night at Austin College, and each team suffered a narrow loss.

The Lady Jackets fell 69-62 to the Lady Roos in the first game of a doubleheader while in the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets were upended by the Kangaroos, 101-95.

In the Lady Jackets’ debut under new head coach Yannick Denson, Howard Payne trailed 20-17 after one quarter, 44-40 at halftime and 57-57 through three periods.

Howard Payne (0-1) shot 37 percent (24 of 69) from the floor and 30 percent (9 of 30) from three-point land, but got to the free throw line just a dozen times and converted only 42 percent (5 of 12) of the attempts. The Lady Jackets were also outrebounded 44-36 and committed 19 turnovers.

Austin College (1-0) knocked down 46 percent (25 of 54) of its shots, 29 percent of its treys (7 of 24) and 71 percent (12 of 17) of its free throw attempts.

Chelsey Harris paced the Lady Jackets with 17 points along with a team-best eight rebounds, trailed by Julissa Ibarra with 13 points, Anastasia Willis with 12, Salina Ali with nine, Caprica Brooks with five, Haile Thompson with four and Lily Yanek with two.

In the Yellow Jackets’ season opener, Austin College pulled away in the second half after the two teams played to a 45-all tie in the first half.

Howard Payne (0-1) shot 54 percent (33 of 61) from the floor, 33 percent (5 of 15) from the three-point arc and 67 percent (24 of 36) at the foul line, but committed 19 turnovers to Austin College’s 11.

The Kangaroos (1-0) knocked down 46 percent (33 of 72) of their shots, 33 percent (9 of 27) of their three-pointers and 67 percent (26 of 39) of their free throws.

Shadd Cole’s 21 points led the charge for Howard Payne trailed by Colton Otts with 13, Timothy Aguero and Thomas Bingham with 12 apiece, Cole Bene with 11, Talen Davis and Luke Cox with nine apiece, Javaris Jones and Eliajah Pruitt with three apiece and Joshua Taylor with two points.

Bingham also pulled down 11 rebounds to complete a double-double.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dallas Baptist, while the Lady Jackets next challenge Abilene Christian at 11 a.m. Thursday in Abilene.
