Picked to win the District 7-4A championship, according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, the Brownwood Lions' 2018-19 basketball season tipped off Friday night with a 68-40 victory over the Bangs Dragons at Warren Gym.

Tied at 15 after one quarter, Brownwood opened up a 36-24 halftime advantage that grew to 52-31 through three frames.

“We looked really sloppy in the first half,” said Lions third-year head coach Nadir Dalleh. “We came out of halftime and made a big run that got everyone involved and that made a huge difference in the outcome. Getting the football guys involved is promising as well. Those guys played really well even without a practice. Hopefully we can get our legs under us pretty fast because we have a tough stretch coming up.”

John Wilhelm led the Lions (1-0) with 17 points trailed by 14 from Beau Bronniman, 10 from Darrell Williams, eight from Zach Strong, seven from Michael Felts, four from Isyah Campos, three from A.J. McCarty, and two points apiece from George Nichols, Zach Barron and Ryan Riker.

For Bangs (0-1), Dawson Light poured in a game-high 21 points followed by Justin Wilson with eight, Wesley Mitchell and Travis Slaughter with four apiece and Riley Taylor with three points.

The next action for the Lions is at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at Lampasas, while the Dragons are currently slated to host Albany at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
