Nine members of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets football team earned postseason accolades as the all-American Southwest Conference honors were recently revealed.
Juan Luna was named Outstanding Sportsman of the Year, while DunTayviun Gross, Eric Haverstock, Abraham Centeno, Tariq Gray, Collin Wright, Austin Killgore, Britt Boler, and Kyle King received honorable mention after a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Luna, a four-year letter winner and senior linebacker, recorded 34 tackles, 3.5 for loss, along with assisting on a sack this season.
Gross, a junior wide receiver, led the American Southwest Conference in receptions with 68 for 647 yards (seventh in ASC). He led the team in touchdown catches with five. He also was sixth in the ASC in all-purpose yards at 118.1 per game.
Haverstock, a junior tight end, missed the first part of the season due to injury but still finished with 21 catches for 229 yards and one touchdown.
Centeno, a senior offensive guard, is a four-year letter winner that started all 10 games on the offensive line for the Jackets this season.
Gray, a sophomore return specialist, finished the season third in the ASC in kick return average at 17.7 per return.
Wright, a senior defensive lineman, was named ASC defensive player of the week earlier this season. He led HPU in sacks with 5.5 (fourth overall in the ASC) and also had 42 tackles, 15 for loss (second overall in the ASC).
Killgore, a junior linebacker, led the Jackets and was third overall in the ASC in tackles with 81. He had 10 for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Boler, a junior linebacker, was second on the team in total tackles with 71, with 12 tackles for loss. He also had 3.5 sacks and three pass breakups.
King, a freshman punter, finished second in the ASC at 40.5 yards per kick. With six punts over 50 yards on the year, he had a season long of 74 yards versus Southwestern.
The Yellow Jackets finished with a 1-9 record under second-year head coach Braxton Harris, 1-8 in ASC action.
