GEORGETOWN — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets basketball team is still in search of its first victory of the season after slipping to 0-3 with an 86-56 road loss to the Southwestern Pirates Saturday.

Trailing 39-37 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets mustered just 19 points over the final 20 minutes as HPU hit only 30 percent (7 of 23) of its field goal attempts after knocking down 45 percent (16 of 35) in the first half. Howard Payne also converted just four free throws the entire game, shooting 31 percent (4 of 13) from the charity stripe.

The Yellow Jackets were also plagued by 26 turnovers, which resulted in 32 Southwestern points, while creating 15 which led to 13 points.

Southwestern was the polar opposite in the second half, pouring in 47 points behind 46 percent (18 of 46) shooting as the Pirates also drained six of their nine three-pointers over the final 20 minutes.

For Howard Payne, Javaris Jones tallied a team-high 17 points while Shadd Cole also finished in double figures with 15, trailed by Thomas Bingham with six, Colton Otts with four, Timothy Aguero and Luke Cox with three apiece, and Joshua Taylor, Alex Mata, Adrian Palacios and Mason Green with two points each.

Southwestern received a game-high 19 points from Ryan Wheeler followed by 15 from Luke Hicks, 12 from Kyle Howard and 10 points from Joel Martinez.

The Yellow Jackets’ pursuit of their first win takes them to the Millsaps Classic in Jackson, Mississippi Nov. 24-25, where HPU will face event host Millsaps and the Mississippi College for Woman.
