WEATHERFORD — The Brownwood Lions split their first two games at the Weatherford tournament Thursday, upending the host Kangaroos, 52-43, before dropping a 50-45 overtime decision to Fort Worth Christian.
On the heels of their first loss at home to Jim Ned, 55-50, on Tuesday, the Lions jumped out to a 16-7 lead on Class 6A Weatherford after one quarter. Brownwood’s advantage stood at 23-20 at halftime, but ballooned to 39-28 by the end of the third period.
Zach Strong and Isyah Campos led the offense with 13 points apiece trailed by eight each from John Wilhelm and Beau Bronniman, five from Darrell Williams, two each from George Nichols and Ryan Riker and one point by Cooper Swanzy.
In the loss to Fort Worth Christian, the game was knotted at 42 at the end of regulation, where the Lions were outscored 8-3 during the extra session.
Wilhelm poured in 13 points to pace Brownwood followed by eight points each from Strong and Bronniman, seven from Nichols, five from Campos, three from Swanzy, and one point from A.J. McCarty.
The Lions (3-2) are slated to face Granbury NCTA, which defeated Fort Worth Christian, 57-34, Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. Friday and Odessa Permian at 6 p.m. Friday as tournament action resumes.
