Garcia scores 25, Brownwood starts second quarter with 15 consecutive points
The Brownwood Lady Lions chalked up their fourth victory in the last five outings, following up their runner-up finish at the Lorena tournament over the weekend with a 51-22 drubbing of the Class 5A Marble Falls Lady Mustangs Tuesday night at Warren Gym.
Leading 9-6 after one quarter, Brownwood (8-6) tallied the first 15 points of the second period en route to a 27-10 halftime lead. The Lady Lions stretched their advantage over Marble Falls (3-9) to 43-17 through three periods and coasted to the finish.
“We came out and played with really good effort, a lot better than our last showing at home,” Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz said in reference to a 54-44 loss to Jim Ned on Nov. 27. “We had 21 steals and 21 rebounds, so that shows the kind of effort we played with.”
Mallory Garcia led the charge for the Lady Lions with 25 points as she buried seven three-pointers. Kenya Barnes chipped in eight points trailed by Matyha Thompson and McKenzie Welker with six apiece and Brooke Price, Hadley Monroe and Catrina Brooks with two points each.
“Mallory shot the ball the really well tonight and we played good team ball,” Hohertz said. “We moved the ball well and found our open people and they stepped up and hit their shots.
“The only negative of the game is we didn’t shoot the ball well from the free throw line. We go from shooting 90 percent in our last game to 53 percent to this game. We have to be a lot more consistent with that because in the 10 years I’ve been here that’s cost us some games.“
Marble Falls scored no more than seven points in any quarter, as Trinity Boyd was the high scorer for the Lady Mustangs with seven points.
Garcia opened the scoring with a trey, then broke a 4-all tie with her second three-pointer, which put Brownwood up for good. In front 9-6 after one frame, Garcia knocked down another triple to ignite the Lady Lions’ string of 15 unanswered points to begin the second quarter.
Monroe followed with a bucket ahead of another three-pointer from Garcia, which gave Brownwood its first double-digit cushion, 17-6, at 6:54 of the second. Following a Marble Falls timeout, Barnes and Thompson added buckets inside to extend the advantage to 21-6, and Thompson later contributed a free throw. Garcia then scored to a cap a fast break at the 3:09 mark, the final points in the decisive surge for the Lady Lions.
Leading by 17 at halftime, a three-pointer from Welker just 33 seconds into the third period gave Brownwood a 20-point advantage, 32-12. The Lady Lions were later held scoreless for a 5:13 stretch in the third period before Garcia drained another trey with two seconds left in the quarter. In that same span, however, Marble Falls mustered just three points, and Brownwood was able to carry a 43-17 edge into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lions return to the road at 6 p.m. Friday as they visit Class 6A San Angelo Central (10-4).
“We’re going to have to bring the same effort,” Hohertz said. “I want to continue to see this effort and take it to the next level. Central is going to be a tough test on the road, they have a pretty good player and we’re going to have to shut her down. Hopefully we’ll be up for the challenge.”
