LONGVIEW — Coming off an upset victory over UT-Dallas in their American Southwest Conference basketball opener last week, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were unable to solve LeTourneau in a 99-60 league defeat Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (2-7, 1-1) trailed 55-23 at halftime and could make up no ground in the second half, where Le Tourneau (6-4, 3-1) outscored HPU by seven points.
Howard Payne converted just 38 percent (26 of 78) of its field goals, and only two three-pointers, while sinking a mere 50 percent (6 of 12) of its free throws, reaching the line just a dozen times.
Shadd Cole scored 18 points for the Yellow Jackets followed by 13 from Talen Davis, six from Evan Adkins, four each from Thomas Bingham and Cole Bene’, three apiece from Joshua Taylor and Eliajah Pruitt, and two each from Timothy Aguero and Adrian Palacios.
LeTourneau, meanwhile, drained 51 percent (40 of 79) its shots, including 13 three-pointers, while hitting 60 percent (6 of 10) of its free throws.
Nate West led LeTourneau with 18 points trailed by Christian Seidl with 16 and Caleb Loggins with 10.
The Yellow Jackets — who trailed by as many as 45 points with 13:57 left in the contest — were also outrebounded, 55-40, and committed 16 turnovers to 13 by LeTourneau.
Saturday marked the start of a stretch of four ASC contests in a week for HPU as the Yellow Jackets visit East Texas Baptist Monday then host Louisiana College on Thursday and Belhaven on Saturday, Dec. 15.
