It’s not often that you get to experience a moment you know will last a lifetime.  This past weekend at the Tournament of Champions in North Dallas the U13 girls soccer team, The Brownwood Rockstarz, had that moment.

The Rockstarz represented the Centex Soccer Association at the state tournament.  This team is no stranger to the tournament.  In fact, last year they fell short in a disappointing loss. Maybe that is what these girls carried with them as they entered this year’s tournament.

Coached by David Pesina and Dustin VanHuss , The Rockstarz worked very hard this season. Many of the girls played volleyball, cross country and basketball for their middle schools, all while fitting in soccer practice and games on the weekends.

With each season, new players have been added to the team, but several have played together since they were 4 or 5 years old.  From the beginning, Addie Pesina, Adryanna “Nona” Huerta and Jasmine Gibbs have played for the Rockstarz.  The following year they added Allie Haynes, Taylor Waldorf and Raylee Hutchins.

As these girls have grown, so has their love for the game.  The Rockstarz are known to practice whether rain or shine. These girls want to win. Their trophies at home are numerous, but they had not clenched the state title until this past weekend!

At the Tournament of Champions, The Rockstarz shut out all three of their opponents in their bracket on Saturday: winning 5-0, 4-0, and 1-0.  The defensive players- Sidney Windham, Jasmine Gibbs, Raylee Hutchins, Shailey Humphreys and Taylor Waldorf didn’t allow a single goal! Several Rockstarz scored Saturday including Aubrie Felix, Kimberlee Green, Joey Newton, Addie Pesina, Talasia Green and Alma Bernal. The Rockstarz played The Fireballs from The Colony on Sunday for the Championship. The Fireballs had come to the Championship game with wins on Saturday of 7-0, 5-1 and 4-0.  Both these teams came to win. It was an intense game. It was tied at half 2-2, with both Rockstarz goals scored by Joey Newton.  After half, the Rockstarz kept it on their opponent’s end of the field most of the time, but struggled to get one into the goal. Late in the game, the Rockstarz sealed the win on a corner kick from Addie Pesina to Kimberlee Green. Up 3-2 with less than 5 minutes to play, the Rockstarz’ defense fought off The Fireballs and became State Champions!

The Rockstarz team includes: Alma Bernal, Aubrie Felux, Paige Franqui, Jasmine Gibbs, Kimberlee Green, Talasia Green, Jenna Harper, Allie Haynes, Valerie Herrera, Adryanna “Nona” Huerta, Shailey Humphries, Raylee Hutchins, River Jones, Joey Newton, Addie Pesina, Arianna Rodriguez, Taylor Waldorf, and Sidney Windham.
