COLEMAN — The Early Longhorns' first-round upset bid came up a few buckets shy as the District 5-3A champion Jim Ned Indians held on for a 39-35 bi-district basketball victory here Monday night.
Early (18-14), the fourth seed out of District 6-3A, trailed 37-25 after three quarters but scored all the points in the fourth period except for the final 17 seconds, where Jim Ned (24-5) was eventually able to ice the victory.
The Longhorns used a similar run in the first half to close the gap to 21-15 at the break. Jim Ned led 18-5 at one point, but a 10-3 Longhorn surge got Early back into the contest.
Ethan Mitchell and John Griffin each scored eight points to lead the Longhorns followed by seven from Brent Grooms, six from Timmy Smithson, and five from Kiah Laborn.
