IOWA PARK — The Brownwood Lions opened the 2019 baseball season Thursday with a pair of setbacks against Decatur and Canyon at the Iowa Park tournament.

In the Lions' 11-0 loss to Decatur to begin the day, Brownwood — whose originally scheduled season opener for Tuesday against the Ranger College JV was cancelled — yielded a single run in the first inning, six in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth of the five-inning, time-limit contest.

Hunter Day and Mason Ryden combined to surrender six earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and five walks, as the Lions defense committed four errors as well.

Offensively, Brownwood was limited to a pair of hits — a single by leadoff batter Reece Rodgers, who also drew a walk, and a single by Khyren Deal.

In their second game of the day, the Lions were on the short end of a 9-3 decision against Canyon.

The Lions again fell in an early hole, giving up two runs in the first inning and three in the second before scratching across their initial run of the second in the bottom of the second.

With one out, Jakob Dorsett was hit by a pitch, then Rowdee Gregory reached base on a two-out error to prolong the frame. Jacob Hataway followed with an RBI infield single to third base which pushed Dorsett across the plate.

A four-run top of the fourth inning allowed Canyon to expand its advantage to 9-1, while the Lions added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

Dorsett started the fourth with a triple to right field and scored when Gregory reached on an error. Then, in the fifth, Rodgers reached on a leadoff single and came home on an RBI single to left field by Hunter Leonard.

The Lions finished with five hits — one each by Rogers, Leonard, Dorsett, Hataway and C.J. Hanley.

On the mound, Hanley, Dorsett and Day teamed up to yield four earned runs on eight hits with seven walks and five strikeouts. The Lions defense committed three errors behind them.

Brownwood (0-2) will face Wichita Falls High at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Burkburnett at 7 p.m. Friday and Bridgeport at 7 p.m. Saturday as Iowa Park tournament action continues.
