GRAHAM – The Brownwood Lady Lions began a new win streak, and senior pitcher Chyanne Ellett achieved a milestone during a 3-0 performance at the Graham softball tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Lions rallied past host Graham, 6-2, in Friday's first game, slipped by Holliday, 1-0, in Friday's second encounter, and blanked Windthorst, 3-0, in Saturday's tournament finale.
In the win over Windthorst, Ellett recorded 16 strikeouts — giving her 1,009 for her career — as she tossed a one-hit shutout. Of those strikeouts, Ellett has recorded 174 this season with just 20 walks.
Offensively, Brownwood pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of third inning against Windthorst and added another in the sixth.
The Lady Lions tallied seven hits — two by Ashlynn Patteson and one apiece by Annie Gillispie, Auzlynn Benedict, Lexie Castillo, Annie-Klein Allgood and Ellett.
In Brownwood's third inning, Castillo led off with a single to left field and advanced all the way to third base on an error. With one out, Gillispie singled to left field to plate Castillo with the only run the Lady Lions needed. Then, with two outs, Patteson delivered an RBI single up the middle that knocked in Gillispie.
Brownwood's final run in the sixth was the result of a one-out RBI double to left field by Benedict, which plated Patteson after she began to the frame with a double to center field.
In Friday's tournament opener against Graham, the host Lady Blues grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but the Lady Lions rallied with a pair of three-spots in the fifth and sixth frames.
Brownwood finished with 10 hits – three by Gillispie, who drove in two runs; two by Allgood, who knocked in a run; and one hit apiece by Patteson, Ellett, Aubrie Harris, Ayanna Clemons and Landry Holden. Harris added an RBI as well.
In the circle, Ellett yielded two runs – one earned – on two hits with 14 strikeouts and one walk.
Down 2-0 in the fifth, Holden was hit by a pitch to start the inning, moved to second on Castillo’s ground out and scored on Allgood’s one-out RBI double to center field. Gillispie then singled up the middle to plate Allgood with the tying run. With two outs, Ellett reached on an error at first base that allowed Gillispie to score the go-ahead run.
Brownwood added three insurance runs in the sixth – all with two outs – as Gillispie singled home Holden, who singled earlier in the frame, then Allgood, who also singled, scored on a wild pitch ahead of Harris’ RBI single to right that brought in Gillispie.
In the 1-0 victory over Holliday, Allgood tossed a complete-game five-hitter, overcoming three Lady Lion errors by striking out three with no walks allowed.
Brownwood scored the game’s lone run in the top of the first inning as Yisel Mendoza’s two-out RBI single to up the middle drove in Patteson, who singled with one out.
The Lady Lions finished with eight hits – three by Gillispie, two by Mendoza and one each by Harris, Patteson and Allgood - but left nine runners stranded on base.
Brownwood (13-1-1) has just one game scheduled for spring break, a 2 p.m. Thursday trip to Midland High.
