The No. 6 East Texas Baptist Lady Tigers came to Brownwood undefeated and left the same way, taking three games from the Howard Payne Lady Jackets in American Southwest Conference softball action.
On Friday, the Lady Jackets suffered a 4-0 defeat, then followed with losses of 9-4 and 6-2 in Saturday doubleheader action.
In Friday’s contest, Howard Payne (6-9, 3-6) was limited to just three hits by ETBU (19-0, 12-0) pitcher Beatriz Lara, who struck out 11 and walked one. Tonya Thompson, Kayla Hill and Emily Martinez picked up the HPU hits, while Hill also drew a base on balls.
The Lady Jackets’ pitching combination of Tia Campos, Hannah Stuart and Gabrielle Roque was tagged for four runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
ETBU scored twice in the second inning and added single runs in the fourth and seventh frames.
During Saturday’s 9-4 loss, the Lady Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but ETBU grabbed a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third. Howard Payne drew even in the bottom of the third, but ETBU surged in front for good, 5-3 in the fourth and added four insurance runs in the sixth.
Howard Payne finished with eight hits — two apiece by Alexis Sullivan and Haley Slater, who began the scoring with a two-run homer. Thompson, Hill, Martinez and Kayla Anderson each added one hit.
The Lady Jackets’ tying run in the third inning scored when Martinez singled to left-center field to drive in Thompson.
HPU tacked on one last run in the sixth as Amy Perez, running for Slater, crossed the plate thanks to a wild pitch.
In the circle, Audrey Simpson, Stuart and Roque teamed up to allow five earned runs on 10 hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. The Lady Jackets also committed three errors.
In the 6-2 setback Saturday, ETBU tallied two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth. Howard Payne answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth frames before the Lady Tigers scored once more in the seventh.
The Lady Jackets recorded six hits — two by Slater and one each by Martinez, Anderson, Hill and Ragen Noriega.
Campos and Stuart combined to surrender five earned runs on nine hits with three walks.
HPU scored in the fourth inning on Hill’s RBI single that knocked in Anderson, and in the fifth on Martinez’s RBI double that plated Thompson.
The Lady Jackets will visit UT-Dallas for three ASC games Thursday and Friday.
