Lady Horn Ellie Ryan places fourth, Brownwood's Alyssa Preston finishes sixth, Bangs' Zhynese Finley comes in 17th
WACO — Following a runner-up finish at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet a year ago, Early’s Allie Blasingame on Friday brought home a gold medal as the state champion in the Class 3A 165-pound weight class.
Blasingame lifted a total of 1,070 pounds, 110 pounds more than her state performance last year and 30 pounds more than state runner-up Shamaurie Williams of El Maton Tidehaven. Blasingame and Williams were even in the bench press with 215 pounds and the deadlift with a new state meet record of 415 pounds. Blasingame, however, owned a 30-pound edge in the squat, 440 pounds to 410, which proved to be the difference.
Fellow Lady Horn Ellie Ryan added a fourth-place finish in the Class 4A 198-pound weight class with 950 pounds lifted. Ryan, who placed 13th in the 181s last year with a 755 total, on Friday lifted 350 in the squat, 225 in the bench and 375 pounds in the deadlift.
As a team, the Lady Horns improved two places, finishing fifth out of 95 teams Friday after coming in seventh out of 86 teams in 2018. Lone Oak won the state championship followed by San Diego, Bishop and Little River Academy.
Also competing for the Lady Horns were:
* Katelyn Espinosa, 6th in the 97s: 585 pounds (220 squat, 135 bench, 230 deadlift)
* Kenzie Poindexter, 7th in the 148s: 800 pounds (325 squat, 160 bench, 315 deadlift)
Brownwood Lady Lion Alyssa Preston lifted a grand total of 940 pounds at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Class 4A State Meet Friday, landing her in sixth place in the 220-pound weight class.
In her first appearance at the state meet, Preston lifted 375 in the squat, 210 in the bench and 355 in the deadlift.
Jazmine Kuper of Springtown (1,165 pounds) won the state championship followed by Bethanie Rodriguez of Crystal City (1,090 pounds), Danielle Carrizales of Lorena (1,000 pounds), Lataevia Thomas of Freeport Brazosport (960 pounds), Britney Ibarra of Hidalgo (960) and Preston.
Bangs Lady Dragon Zhynese Finley came in 17th in the 105-pound weight class at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Class 3A State Meet Friday.
Finley lifted a total of 610 pounds – 215 in the squat, 120 in the bench and 275 in the deadlift.
Blue Ridge’s Natalie Walker won the state championship in the weight class with 825 pounds lifted.
