CHEROKEE — The Class A Division II No. 9 Blanket Tigers opened the 2019 football season with a resounding 57-12 road victory over the Cherokee Indians Friday night.

Blanket jumped out to a 12-0 lead through one quarter, which ballooned to 35-6 by halftime. The Tigers extended their advantage to 49-6 through three periods, and added the final touchdown in the fourth quarter to enforce the 45-point mercy rule.

The Tigers yielded just 8 yards of total offense, all on the ground, while amassing 244 yards — 157 rushing and 87 passing.

Logan Wheeler rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown, caught a 60-yard scoring pass and threw a 24-yard touchdown for Blanket. Kameron Spivey chipped in 40 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and completed two passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. Hector Castaneda added three rushing touchdowns and finished with 15 yards on the ground.

Blanket will be on the road again in Week 2 at Lometa, a 34-13 winner over Lingleville in Week 1.

 

Brookesmith 47, Santa Anna 0

 

SANTA ANNA — The Class A Division II No. 12 Brookesmith Mustangs dominated the Santa Anna Mountaineers from start to finish for a 47-0 season-opening victory Friday night.

Brookesmith grabbed a 27-0 lead by the end of the first period and scored 20 more points in the second quarter to end the game at halftime, via the 45-point mercy rule.

The Mustangs generated 238 yards of total offense, all on the ground, as Tyler Williford led the assault with 163 yards and four touchdowns. Jonathan Willoughby chipped in 51 yards and two scores while Avery Williford added 26 yards rushing.

The Mountaineers finished with just 83 total yards — 49 rushing and 34 passing — and committed three turnovers, including two lost fumbles.

Silas Lara completed 8 of 14 passes for 34 yards and rushed for a team-best 28 yards for Santa Anna. Cody Robertson caught three passes for 14 yards and added 13 yards rushing. Jayton Perry made two grabs for 11 yards, and Jaxson Diggs contributed 8 yards rushing and caught a 5-yard pass.

Next week, Brookesmith will visit Panther Creek, which defeated the Santa Anna JV, 46-32, while Santa Anna ventures to Rochelle, a 60-27 winner over Stephenville Faith Friday night.

San Saba 55, Johnson City 3

 

SAN SABA – The reigning Class 2A Division I state semifinalist and fourth-ranked San Saba Armadillos picked up where they left off the from the 2018 campaign, throttling the Johnson City Eagles, 55-3, in Friday night's season opener.

The Armadillos amassed 538 yards of total offense — 387 rushing and 151 passing — while allowing just 106 yards, including 26 yards rushing on 31 carries. San Saba jumped out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter, carried a 41-3 advantage into the locker room at halftime, and added touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

Eli Salinas rushed for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14 carries, while quarterback Sean O'Keefe — a Tulsa commit — ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries.

O'Keefe was also 8 of 11 through the air for 94 yards and a touchdown, while Risien Shahan connected on both of his pass attempts for 57 yards and two scores.

Juan Ramirez caught a team-high four passes for 22 yards, Logan Glover finished with three receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown, and Abel Martinez and Salinas scored on receptions of 35 and 32 yards, respectively.

San Saba hits the road for the first time next week as they travel to Harper, which is coming off a 40-0 loss to Christoval.

 

Eastland 57, Comanche 21

 

COMANCHE – Led by Dave Campbell's Texas Football Class 3A Offensive Preseason Player of the Year Behren Morton, the Eastland Mavericks handed the Comanche Indians a season-opening 57-21 loss Friday night.

Morton completed 9 of 18 passes for 210 yards with three touchdowns, while Brandon Fielding contributed 151 yards rushing and three scores. Eastland generated 475 total yards — 257 rushing and 218 passing.

Comanche finished with 346 yards, including 277 on the ground, as Luke Wilson led the charge with 146 yards and a touchdown. Jorge Rios added a 15-yard touchdown run and Logan Wilkerson scored on a 2-yard carry. Cash Cook completed 2 of 9 passes for 58 yards, and Bryce Hermesmeyer caught two passes totaling 64 yards.

Eastland jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter, and both teams scored three touchdowns in the second — including a 35-yard interception return by Maverick Alex Gonzales — as Comanche trailed 34-21 at the break. Eastland added a touchdown and a field goal in the third period, and two more trips to the end zone in the fourth.

Comanche is back at home against next week as it welcomes Breckenridge, which is coming off a 35-20 loss to Jacksboro — the Indians' primary threat to the District 6-3A Division II crown.

 

Winters 21, Goldthwaite 0

 

GOLDTHWAITE — The Keith Virdell coaching era at Goldthwaite began Friday night, where the Winters Blizzards spoiled the Eagles' party with a 21-0 victory.

Goldthwaite was limited to 152 total yards, including 142 rushing, and lost four turnovers — two fumbles and a pair of interceptions. Meanwhile, Winters produced 242 yards, with 227 coming on the ground, and did not commit a turnover.

The Eagles gave up single touchdowns in the first, third and fourth periods.

Jackson Patrick rushed for a team-best 66 yards for Goldthwaite while Angel Morales contributed 42 and Dusty Partin rushed for 23. Grayson Moore was 1 of 7 passing for 10 yards with a completion to Partin. Moore also added 11 yards on the ground.

Goldthwaite will attempt to bounce back on the road next week against Junction, which opened its season with a 27-24 triumph over Ingram Tom Moore.
