The Brownwood Lady Lions were dealt their third consecutive defeat, and second in a row via straight sets, as the Class 5A Abilene Wylie Lady Bulldogs notched a 25-14, 25-23, 25-13 victory at Warren Gym Friday.
The Lady Lions (10-10) have played two 6A schools and a pair of 5A programs over the past two weeks, going 1-3 during that stretch. Brownwood hosts Lampasas at 6 p.m. Tuesday, then Graham visits at 4:30 p.m. Friday as part of a lengthy home stand that leads up to the Sept. 27 District 7-4A opener against Glen Rose.
In the loss to Wylie, Aleyia Cotton paced the Brownwood attack with seven kills trailed by four from Olivia Fowler, three from Jaylen Savage, two each from Kylie Morris and Katelyn Windham and one from Kylie Wooten.
Tessa Goodwin dished out 10 assists, Wooten finished with six and Caitlyn Moody was credited with one.
Fowler and Morris both served a pair of aces while Wooten and Goodwin added one apiece.
Defensively, Moody's 26 digs led the team followed by 11 apiece from Morris and Goodwin, nine from Fowler, five from Cotton, four from Wooten, two from Savage and one each from Windham and Ashlyn Storm.
At the net, Fowler, Cotton, Savage and Storm logged one block each.
The Lady Lions' best showing came in the middle set, where Brownwood owned an 18-15 edge before Wylie reeled off seven of the next eight points to regain control, 22-19.
Brownwood gave up the first three points of the set, but answered with six of its own as a kill by Fowler staked the Lady Lions to a 6-3 advantage. Wylie later drew even at 14, but an ace by Goodwin put Brownwood back in front, 15-14. Cotton then broke a 15-all tie with a kill, which began the Lady Lions' run of three straight points — and their final lead of the match.
The Lady Lions gave up the first three points in the final set, and trailed 12-3 early before an ace from Wooten stopped the Wylie run. Brownwood got as close as 14-8 following a Wylie service error, but no closer the remainder of the set.
