In the American Southwest Conference volleyball opener for both squads, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets came up on the short end of a 25-8, 25-8, 25-14 decision to Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Ciara Chappel and Mitsue Rodriguez recorded four kills each to pace the Lady Jackets (1-6, 0-1), followed by three from Shaylyn Wise, and two apiece from Mya Ross, Canyon Hughes, and Teresa Hopkins.
Kennedy Sam contributed eight assists trailed by four from Kaitlyn Elsten, three from Logan Boyd and one each from Ross and Kylee Shirley.
Hughes served the lone ace for HPU.
Defensively, Ross amassed six digs followed by Shirley with four, Hughes, Sam, Elsten and Christian Wilson with two apiece, and Boyd, Rodriguez, Aviyon Wilborn, Hannah Rule and Amaya Marshall with one each.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (5-4, 1-0) received six kills each from Miranda Klein and Jenna Gillean; 14 assists, five aces and nine digs from Cory Jo Martin; and two blocks each from Kayla Janikula and Martin.
Howard Payne will take on Texas Lutheran at 11 a.m. Saturday, Hendrix at 7 p.m. Saturday and Louisiana College at noon Sunday in Conway, Arkansas — home of Hendrix College. The Lady Jackets resume ASC action at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Concordia.
