PLAINVIEW — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets were unable to hand Wayland Baptist its first loss of the season, as HPU dropped a 3-0 non-conference women's soccer decision Tuesday afternoon.

Howard Payne surrendered the first goal 25:29 into the contest as Fortune Kede scored with an assist by Megan Attaborough. Wayland Baptist (3-0-1) extended its lead to 2-0 just 6:48 into the second half when Kede scored again, this time on an assist by Estefany Gonzalez. Attaborough contributed the final goal for Wayland, scoring with 22:14 remaining.

Howard Payne attempted 12 shots with five on goal — three by Lesly Garcia and two by Jayde Miyamoto. Wayland finished with 19 shots and seven on frame. Delaney Castor tallied four saves while playing all 90 in minutes in goal for Howard Payne.

The Lady Jackets were coming off a 5-1 home victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God Saturday. Howard Payne tallied a pair of first-half goals and tacked on three more over the final 45 minutes.

Kara Moore scored 7:21 into the contest with an assist from Kendra Cecil, while Kelsey Bunch found the net unassisted at the 19:29 mark.

In the second half, Kaegan Sims stretched the lead to 3-0 following an assist from Kate Van Wyk with 22:47 remaining. SAGU recorded its only goal 51 seconds later as Olivia Reader scored with an assist from Alexandra Stuva. HPU then tacked on its final two goals as Carrie Gerdes scored with an assist from Katie Burnside with 17:39 left, and Garcia found the net with an assist from Ajacia Mojica with 10:08 to go.

Howard Payne attempted 25 shots, with 12 on goal, to SAGU's six with three on target. Castor recorded two saves in 71 minutes for HPU, while Camille Quinones played the final 19 minutes.

The Lady Jackets (3-3-1) return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday as they host Texas College in the first half of a doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets.


Wayland Baptist 7, Yellow Jackets 1


PLAINVIEW — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets remained winless on the season with a 7-1 non-conference men's soccer loss at undefeated Wayland Baptist Tuesday night.

Wayland (4-0-1) scored three goals in the first 15 minutes, and five in the first half. Santiago Pereyra scored first 9:22 into the contest, Adir Versano lit up the net at 11:25 and Pereyra scored again at 12:23. With 12:53 left in the half, Stefano Pesce added the fourth goal, while James Westfield found the net with 2:05 remaining before halftime.

HPU allowed two more goals in the second half — to Westfield 9:28 after the break, and to Gerardo Perdomo 3:22 later.

The Yellow Jackets spoiled the shutout with 25:42 remaining as Miller Boykin scored with an assist from Zachary Moreno.

Howard Payne finished with five shots, including three on goal — by Boykin, Alejandro Lopez and Joshua Rodriguez. Wayland fired 23 shots with 10 on target. Andrew Hackney recorded two saves in 63 minutes for HPU, while Matt Prall picked up one in 27 minutes.

The Yellow Jackets (0-5) return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday as they visit American Southwest Conference rival Hardin-Simmons in a non-conference match.
