SEGUIN — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets began their second season under head coach Yannick Denson with a 70-63 non-conference road victory over the Texas Lutheran Lady Bulldogs Friday night.

The Lady Jackets (1-0) drained 44 percent (25 of 56) of their shots, including 38 percent (12 of 31) of their three-pointers, while holding Texas Lutheran (0-3) to 35 percent (24 of 68) shooting, including 17 percent (5 of 30) from three-point land.

HPU's hot hand also negated TLU's 43-36 edge in rebounds and the Lady Jackets' 21 turnovers compared to the Lady Bulldogs' 18.

Trailing 18-15 after one quarter, the Lady Jackets were able to establish a 41-36 lead by halftime that increased to 58-46 through three periods.

Anastasia Willis finished with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds to pace Howard Payne trailed by 13 points from Payge Grable, 11 from Lily Janek, six apiece from Salina Ali, Bria Neal and Brownwood's own Mallory Garcia, five each from Chelsey Harris and Julissa Ibarra, and four points from Delaney Ingram.

Tara Molina led Texas Lutheran with 14 points while Morgan Rodriguez chipped in 10 points.

The Lady Jackets visit NCAA Division I Abilene Christian at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, then open the home portion of their schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 against Southwestern.
