SEGUIN — After opening the season with a 98-59 loss at Austin College seven days prior, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets rebounded to collect their first victory of the season, 78-69 over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs Friday night.
The Howard Payne (1-1) offense was on fire all night, converting 54 percent (30 of 56) of its field goals, including 44 percent (7 of 16) of its three-pointers. Texas Lutheran knocked down just 37 percent (23 of 62) of its shots, and 25 percent (8 of 32) of its treys.
The Yellow Jackets also owned a 41-33 edge in rebounds, which helped overcome HPU's 17 turnovers compared to 12 for the Bulldogs.
Despite shooting 45 percent (10 of 22) in the first half, the Yellow Jackets still trailed 33-27 at halftime. In the second half, however, Howard Payne drained 58 percent (20 of 34) of its shots to complete the comeback.
Tyrell Thompson poured in 17 points to lead the Howard Payne attack trailed by 16 points from Jase Miguez, 10 from Joshua Taylor, nine from Luke Cox, seven and a team-high 10 rebounds from Timothy Aguero, seven points as well from both Javaris Jones and Talen Davis, four from Jaylan Ballou and one point from Bret Eisenbach.
Texas Lutheran's Sebastian Andrade led all scorers with 24 points while Caleb Lister and Brock Weaver chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
The Yellow Jackets are off until 3 p.m. Saturday when they welcome Southwestern to the Brownwood Coliseum for the home opener.
