Brownwood Lions head football coach and athletic director Sammy Burnett was admitted to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene Sunday night for abdominal issues, and emergency surgery was performed later in the evening.

Surgery was completed around 12:45 a.m. Monday morning, and Burnett was resting comfortably, according to Brownwood High School athletic secretary Lisa Jaso.

Assistant head coach David Jones is serving in the capacity of head coach in Burnett's absence.

“I got a call Sunday about noon from his sister and she said he'd been hurting all night Saturday night and she convinced him to go up to the emergency room here in Brownwood,” Jones said. “They took him up there and she called me about 2 p.m., we were up here working, and she said they thought it was kidney stones. Come to find out, she called back a little later, and said it was not kidney stones and that they were needing to take him to Abilene to Hendrick. They ended up doing surgery late last night on him, and surgery went well. This morning I talked to Kathleen, his wife, and his sister, Shannon. He was asleep, it was a long night and surgery was late in the evening.”

The Lions (10-1) take on Alvarado (9-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the University of North Texas' Apogee Stadium in Denton in the area round of the Class 4A Division I playoffs.

“Our preparation Saturday and Sunday was no different, we do the same thing every weekend,” Jones said. “We have a routine we go through, nothing changes. We met with our kids this morning and joked that our coaching staff could all probably leave and the guys would show up ready to play Friday night because they understand the process and what we do everyday.”

Regarding Burnett's return, Jones said, “As far as Sammy being present Friday night, that remains to be seen. We're preparing as if he will not, but hoping for the best. I don't think they had spoken to the doctor yet today, but I suppose they will have more information after they talk to the doctor about recovery, how long he'll be in the hospital and things like that.”
