ALPINE – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets opened the ASC-SCAC Challenge, hosted by Sul Ross, with their second consecutive victory, 66-59 over Schreiner Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 19-14 after one quarter, Howard Payne (3-2) outscored Schreiner (0-5) by a 23-8 count in the second period to grab a 37-27 halftime advantage. The Lady Jackets later carried a 50-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Howard Payne converted 41 percent (24 of 59) of its field goals, including 36 percent (9 of 25) of its three-pointers, and 56 percent (9 of 16) of its free throws. The Lady Jackets also forced 26 turnovers, while committing 22, which helped overcome a 41-39 disadvantage in rebounds.

Lily Janek led Howard Payne with 15 points, nailing 4 of 9 three-pointers, followed by Bria Neal with 10 points; Brownwood's Mallory Garcia with nine points on a trio of three-pointers; Anastasia Willis with eight points and 11 rebounds; Delaney Ingram with six points; Salina Ali, Chelsey Harris and Julissa Ibarra with five points apiece; and Catlyn Ward added three points.

Schreiner sank just 33 percent (19 of 58) of its shots and 29 percent (6 of 28) of its treys, but knocked down 75 percent (15 of 20) of its free throws.

Zahra Cross tallied 16 points followed by Yasmine Arogunjo with 11.

The Lady Jackets wrap up the ASC-SCAC Challenge at 1 p.m. Sunday against St. Thomas (Houston).


Jackets drop third in a row, 96-82 to Centenary


The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were dealt a third straight defeat and fell to 0-2 at the Brownwood Coliseum with Friday night's 96-82 loss to Centenary in non-conference action.

The Yellow Jackets (1-4) shot 50 percent (31 of 62) from the field and 56 percent (9 of 16) from the three-point arc, but just 58 percent (11 of 19) from the free throw line. Howard Payne was also outrebounded, 47-30, and committed 23 turnovers.

Jase Miguez scored a game-high 24 points for Howard Payne trailed by Luke Cox with 16 points, 11 from Tyrell Thompson, eight from Jaylan Ballou, seven from Jacob Smith, six from Joshua Taylor, four from Colton Otts, and two points apiece from Talen Davis, Javaris Jones and Evan Adkins.

Centenary (2-1) drained 45 percent (32 of 71) of its shots, 39 percent (9 of 23) of its treys, and 72 percent (23 of 32) percent of its free throws.

Neil Hawkins tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds for Centenary followed by 16 points each from Cedric Harris and Ty Prince, 11 points from Ralph Johnson and 10 points from Kile Mingo.

The Yellow Jackets return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at Southwestern, where HPU will attempt to avenge a 79-78 home loss on Nov. 23.
