GEORGETOWN — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets slipped to 1-5 on the season with their second loss to the Southwestern Pirates in two weeks, 88-78 here Saturday afternoon.

In a rematch of Southwestern's 79-78 win at the Brownwood Coliseum on Nov. 23, the Pirates (4-3) raced out to a 46-31 halftime advantage. The Yellow Jackets trailed by as many as 30 points, 68-38, just 5:15 into the second half before eventually shaving the deficit to seven points, 83-76, with 1:47 to go following a layup by Tyrell Thompson.

Howard Payne finished the game shooting 49 percent (32 of 65) from the floor, including 33 percent (8 of 24) from three-point territory, and 50 percent (6 of 12) at the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets were outrebounded 39-33 and both teams committed 17 turnovers.

Jase Miguez accounted for a game-high 44 points for the Yellow Jackets, draining 18 of 25 shots, including 4 of 9 treys, and 4 of 5 free throws. Jaylan Ballou contributed eight points trailed by six apiece from Thompson, Talen Davis and Luke Cox, five from Jatden Modrall and three points from Joshua Taylor.

Southwestern knocked down 44 percent (28 of 64) of its shots, including 41 percent (15 of 37) of its treys, along with 71 percent (17 of 24) of its free throws.

Brandon Alexander led the Pirates with 23 points followed by 19 from Luke Hicks and 10 from Kyle Howard.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Louisiana College.
