A pair of Brownwood Lions were recognized for their contributions on the football field earlier this week as the Associated Press revealed its Class 4A All-State Football Team.

Brownwood senior inside linebacker Rowdee Gregory and senior safety Zach Strong both received honorable mention.

Gregory finished second on the team in tackles with 103 tackles, tallied the most tackles for loss with 14.5, added 2.5 sacks, recovered two fumbles and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Strong led the Lions with four interceptions, including two pick sixes, and also chipped in 57 tackles, which ranked eighth on the team.

As a unit, the Brownwood defense allowed 14.6 points and 265.4 yards — 145 rushing and 120.4 passing — with 21 takeaways, four defensive touchdowns and and four shutouts.

All-district honors for the Lions have not been revealed yet as fellow 5-4A Division I member La Vega is competing for its second straight state championship later this week.

The Lions finished with an 11-2 overall record and 3-1 mark in district action, good for second place in the league standings under second-year head coach Sammy Burnett.
