In their home opener at Gordon Wood Stadium Tuesday night, the Brownwood Lions soccer team traded goals with the Lorena Leopards throughout the contest. The last goal, however, belonged to Lorena as the Leopards kept the Lions winless following a 4-3 decision.

Knotted at 3 with 7:57 remaining in regulation, Lorena recorded the game-winning goal.

The Lions had two chances to score on corner kicks in the final 30 seconds, but their shots were off target as the first victory of the season eluded their grasp.

“I'm proud of the boys,” said Lions head coach Scott Swanzy. “They worked hard and they didn't run out of gas, but we still have to finish. We got down a little bit in the last five minutes and we have to be able to finish the whole game. When we do that we'll be on the winning side.”

Blake Brasher, Jeremiah Bond and Caleb Nelson recorded goals for the Lions, who were coming off an 0-3 performance at the Governor's Cup tournament in Georgetown this past weekend.

“We got Blake (Brasher) back and Jose (Angeles-Torres) back, and when we have everybody healthy we're a little more effective,” Swanzy said. “But this was a big improvement over last weekend.”

The Lions are back in action at the Springtown tournament Thursday and Friday. Brownwood is slated to face Decatur in its first outing of the weekend.
